Technology in Classrooms Changing

Techstination feature for Wednesday, April 18, 2001

The changing face of technology in the classroom. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bloomberg Bootcamp. In many school districts... the battles are still being fought to obtain enough computers and access to the Internet. Others are moving beyond that stage using technology to streamline everything from textbooks to test taking. At Technology and Learning magazine, editor in chief Susan McLester... says for those who still question the need for computers in the classroom... she has a question... .

"Do you need one at work? That's the bottom line. People who say do we really need technology in schools... it's not really a question any more. We have technology in all aspects of our lives, so should we be depriving the one place where kids are learning. Should we be depriving that setting of technology? It doesn't make any sense."

And when it comes to what technologies are hot in the classroom...

"I think wireless technology is probably the hottest thing going on right now. It's small handheld devices that connect to the Internet that kids take home, do their homework on."

Kids with handheld computers? McLester says those rows of big PCs and monitors will be disappearing... .

"Palms are taking the place of computers. They're taking the place of Internet connected laptops or desktop models. And I think that's what we're going to see in the future."

An example of one company's efforts to equip schools with handheld PCs in my next report. Bootcamp, I'm Fred Fishkin, Bloomberg Radio.
