More new tricks for wireless phones. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bloomberg Bootcamp. It's the first of a new generation of wireless phones that have the ability to run the same kinds of Java applications... .that you use on a PC. The Motorola i85s...

"Right now, we currently have calculators on there. We have expense calculators. There is conversion charts. There's even a program that converts and tells you how many stairs to put in a stairwell depending on the height of the landing."

Diane Rainey of Nextel, which now has the i85s on the market. The Java capability means... applications can be developed for a wide variety of needs... .for specific professions and industries...

"We're inviting other businesses and engineers to develop industry specific applications, Java applications, that can be used on our phone. And then Nextel customers can go to our Web site and download those applications to the phone using a connector and for very small fees. Anywhere from zero to ten dollars probably."

It can store games as well and eventually will be able to download the apps wirelessly. The device also includes a speakerphone... and PDA like functions to store calendars and address books... .

"On the day timer you can put in your date of your appointment and the time. Then you can program the phone to ring you back ten minutes before your meeting reminding you of that appointment.

The Motorola i85s sells for about two hundred dollars. Bootcamp, I'm Fred Fishkin, Bloomberg Radio.
