GM expanding Super Cruise hands free driving availability

Techstination feature for Wednesday, February 28, 2024

Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear.   I’m Fred Fishkin.      GM is continuing to expand the roads where its Super Cruise hands free driving is available.   The automaker says it will be doubling the amount of roads to about 750 thousand miles…including many that are rural in the coming months.   Super Cruise Program Engineering Manager Ursula Stanborough says it helps with both comfort and safety…

“Obviously with GM safety is our paramount.  That means that your eyes are always on the road.  Even though your hands are not on the steering wheel, you are still in control.  Your eyes are on the road.  We have a driver monitoring system that is monitoring your eyes, monitoring your head.”

GM and Ford have taken a different approach than, say, Tesla, which requires customers, even with so called full self driving, to keep a hand on the wheel.  But its system isn’t restricted to certain roads.
