Get Ready for the 3D Web

Techstination feature for Friday, May 11, 2001

Get ready for the Web in 3D. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bloomberg Bootcamp. The promise is to make browsing the Web... .more like playing one of those 3D computer games... like Doom or Quake. Intel has partnered with Macromedia to develop the technology used in a new version of Shockwave... the popular browser plug in. Macromedia's Miriam Geller... .

"We would love to see it everywhere used in all sorts of games on the Web, used for all sorts of merchandising online and you're going to see a few good examples of that coming out shortly as well. Ford, for instance, is using Shockwave 3D to show one of their new SUVs, one of their Ford Explorers. And we also think that people are going to use it in online learning environments."

Up until now, a lot of 3D technology has required a high powered PC... .and even then it could be quirky. Geller says that won't be the case this time...

"We've actually developed Shockwave Player and the new Shockwave 3D content in a way so that everyone who can install Shockwave player... and those are people on Macintosh and Windows, whether it's Windows 95, 98 NT or a Macintosh 8.6... whatever you might have... .can install Shockwave player and be able to view this content."

Among the first sites using the technology are CBS Sportsline and National Geographic. Bootcamp, I'm Fred Fishkin, Bloomberg Radio.
