Wireless could win the home networking war. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bloomberg Bootcamp. As more and more households add a second or even third PC... .the market for home networking continues to grow. The idea is to let multiple computers share an Internet connection... .printers, files... and play head to head games. An easy, economical way to network without having to run new wires through the walls... is to use your existing phone lines. But you are limited to areas of the house where there are phone jacks. At Compaq Computer, Matthew Wagner says more and more consumers are opting to go wireless... .

"Absolutely. It's one of those areas that we're putting a lot of focus on throughout the company. But specifically in the Presario mobile group, we've got a full line of 802.11B based wireless networking options for the home, school, office or even public hotspots that you're starting to see a lot of interest in.

Compaq is working with Starbucks for instance to enable wireless Internet connections in its coffee shops. Until recently, the wireless technology costs confined its use to corporate environments... but...

"The costs are coming down dramatically and you'll see that trend continue over the next near to medium term. PC cards in the market today range in price for the low hundred dollars to mid to high hundreds."
