Pumping Digital Music Everywhere

Techstination feature for Thursday, June 21, 2001

Pumping that digital music everywhere. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Whether you have downloaded music or created your own collection of digital songs on your PC... new technology is on the way to let you connect those music files to your family room stereo... or even your car. A company called SimpleDevices is partnering with Motorola... .on the new products that will be on the market by late summer. CEO Lou Hughes... says the first is called SimpleFi...

"What it is is a device that sits on their Hi-fi and enables them to access any and all audio content that they would have on their PC in the form of MP3s, Windows Media or whatever they have, so that people can be anywhere in the room where they're experiencing the music and be accessing all of their play lists wirelessly from their PC."

The wireless bridge uses the HomeRF standard for the connection... .

"Very easy to install. You don't need to rip your computer cover off. Our basic premise is that everything must be incredibly simple... no user manuals required."

We've heard that promise and been disappointed before. Remember Plug 'n Play? So we'll see. Pricing should be under three hundred dollars. Another device planned for later this year will wirelessly transmit music files to your car... .where they'll be stored on a hard drive in the trunk so you can listen on the road. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
