Techstination feature for Friday, June 22, 2001

New varieties of Blackberries. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. When it comes to personal digital assistants that let you send and receive email... anytime... anywhere... the Blackberry from Research in Motion is hard to beat. It's always on and always connected. That's why some 8 thousand companies are using Blackberry devices. Next on the horizon... .the addition of voice communication. Research in Motion Chairman James Balsillie... .says it's starting in Europe with GPRS... next generation wireless services...

"What's different with GPRS is number one... you get to go on the GSM networks all throughout the world, so it opens up the geography to a hundred new networks around the world. Second, it also combines voice and date in one appliance." When can your customers in the United States expect to see this? "Well really when will you see GPRS in North America is a good question. I think you'll see it commercially ready next year for sure."

And beyond the corporate market... the company is pushing Blackberry devices into the hands of consumers... through America Online and Earthlink. Balsillie tells us reports that AOL may drop its offering aren't true...

"We have leading technology. They have an unbelievably strong market position. We have every reason to work together."

Between eight and nine hundred thousand Blackberry devices are in use today... and Balsillie believes the real growth is about to begin. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
