Inkjet Printer Battle

Techstination feature for Wednesday, June 27, 2001

Great printers... for very little money. Bloomberg Bootcamp, a report on today's technology. The decision by Xerox to bow out of the consumer inkjet printer market underscores how intense the competition is. At the top... Hewlett Packard and Lexmark continue to battle it out. While HP has announced that will go after the low end market where Lexmark has been strong... .Lexmark is about to launch a counter attack. It has announced a new all in one printer and scanner... the X 83... .

"In this device, we've taken the best printing system, an outstanding scanner and merged it all together in an easy to use package. On the printing side, it prints at 24 hundred by 12 hundred dots per inch resolution, which gives you photo quality output. And then on the scanning side, we've included an industry leading scanner."

Lexmark's Greg Brunnick The X 83 can also serve as a stand alone copier when the computer is turned off... and...

"Instead of having users go through a menu system to find what they're looking for... say reduction, enlargement, multiple copies, paper types... we've taken those common features and added it to the operator panel."

. The price is just 199 dollars. But inkjet printer prices are deceptive. The real money is made in selling supplies... those ink cartridges that sell for thirty or forty dollars. HP, for instance, has estimated that it sells 10 new cartridges per second... .per day. Bloomberg Bootcamp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
