Compaq's Dual Worlds PC

Techstination feature for Monday, July 9, 2001

A concept computer from Compaq. Bloomberg Bootcamp, a report on today's technology. It can be a tough choice if you're in the market for a new computer. Whether to buy a notebook PC or a desktop. It may not be long before you can buy both at the same time. At Compaq Computer, Chris Landry is the manager of the design center where they are working on a new kind of hybrid computer... .

"What I'm showing you is our version of a concept car for PCs. This is a handmade model, but basically proves the point."

It looks like a laptop, but... the keyboard and track pad lift out... ..

"Like your kids' transformers, I've transformed it from a conventional notebook into a full desktop display by removing the keyboard, removing the wireless optical mouse and then being able to articulate the display upward into an ergonomic position." And then you just use the keyboard and mouse as if you had a desktop. "Exactly, and you can position this anywhere on your desk you choose."

Compaq calls the concept... Dual Worlds. When might it be brought to market?

"We don't have a date particularly right now that we're targeting. But I can tell you we are currently evaluating eight different designs... some of which are a little bit more ergonomic than this. And we're also investigating some very different aesthetics in terms of how the product looks."

With notebook computer sales having shown considerable immunity to the PC sales slump... .the concept could wind up on store shelves sooner rather than later. Bloomberg Bootcamp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
