Saying good-bye to handheld phones behind the wheel. Bloomberg Bootcamp, a report on today's technology. New York and Rhode Island have already passed laws... and 39 other states are considering legislation banning the use of handheld cell phones while driving. That has opened the door for a small, privately held company called Cellport Systems... ..to do some very big business. Its universal, voice activated hands-free devices that can be used with a variety of handheld phones... .are coming to an automobile near you. Ford is the first automaker that will offer the Cellport 3000 in certain model vehicles as soon as this summer... .

"In certain Lincoln lines it will be standard, a standard feature. In other Lincoln lines it will be an option and across the SUV line I believe it will be an option among the higher performance packages."

Cellport CEO Pat Kennedy. The system uses adaptors for individual phones that will allow individuals in a household to use different kinds of handheld phones... in the vehicle's cradle. The idea is to allow you to use the phone keeping both hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road at all times...

"What you do is you initiate the system by saying Cellport speed dial or you could say Cellport speed dial and the system automatically dials the phone."

Kennedy says the company is talking to virtually all of the other automakers as well. His belief is hands free, voice dial systems will become as common in cars as seatbelts. Bloomberg Bootcamp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
