A Voice Recorder That's Music to Your Ears

Techstination feature for Tuesday, July 24, 2001

A business voice recorder that's music to your ears. Bloomberg Bootcamp, a report on today's technology. It is designed for dictation. The new Olympus DM-1 Digital Voice Recorder can record hours of speech on the memory card included. But when you're not using it for business... you can use it for pleasure. The DM-1 doubles as player for MP3 or Windows Media music files as well. Product manager Keith Swiderski...

"We have a very strong following with the business people, with the business market and we sell a lot of B to B products in voice recorders as well as the digital cameras. And now we want to try to give them a little more. Instead of them having to carry a separate Walkman or separate MP3 player, we felt why not bundle it all into the same package."

The DM-1 attaches to a PC through a USB cable to transfer voice or music files. Is there are market for a device like this with a split personality? Olympus thinks so... especially among the under forty crowd...

"That's our demographic, 25 to 40. People who are in business now, wanting a voice recorder but also want to be able to have their music tunes with them, that's the market we're looking for." And not have to buy a separate player or carry a separate player... "That's right."

The 299 dollar price is about fifty dollars more than a similar model without music capability. It ships with a 64 megabyte SmartMedia card ... enough to store an hour of music or 22 hours of voice... .or a combination of the two. The sound quality is surprisingly rich using Surround Sound emulation. There's more information at olympusamerica.com. You can find us at Bloomberg.com/radio. Bloomberg Bootcamp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
