SEMA backs legislation to ensure vehicle safety with after market gear

Techstination feature for Tuesday, March 24, 2026

Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear.  I’m Fred Fishkin SEMA, the Speicialty Equipment Market Association is pushing legislation in Washington to ensure that when you install after-market gear on your vehicle….a bike rack for instance….that the safety technology you have will continue to work.   SEMA Director of Communications Matt Daigle tells us the push is for manufacturers to provide needed calibration information for sensors, cameras and the like..in vehicle safety systems..

Whether it’s a LIDAR sensor or whether it’s a camera that these technologies use, just a point 2 degree misalignment can be the difference between impacting something or not impacting something or hitting, these sensors working as intended.”

The hope is to have legislation enacted by the fall.   Check the advocacy section at SEMA.org.
