Memory Storage Mania

Techstination feature for Monday, July 30, 2001

Too many memory cards to remember. Bloomberg Bootcamp, a report on today's technology. Here we go again... .while the consumer electronics industry fumbles with different memory storage formats... consumer confusion reigns. There are MemorySticks... CompactFlash cards in two different sizes, SmartMedia, Secure Digital, and MultiMedia cards. You may need one type for a digital camera, another for an MP3 music player and yet another for a PDA. The idea was supposed to be that you can buy one memory card and use it in a variety of devices. A company called SanDisk... has pioneered the Secure Digital format with Toshiba and Panasonic. SanDisk's Thomas Climer says the postage stamp sized device is catching on fast... .

"We're seeing a lot of migration now at the OEM design level with the handheld PCs, of course the Palm PDA they just released with the Secure Digital card expansion slot, we're very excited about that. But products from Sharp and Panasonic and Casio, LG, Nintendo... have all designed in an SD security card slot."

The battle over a memory card standard is far from over. Climer believes consumers will be faced with confusion for some time to come...

"Well Sony, of course, will do what they want. The 800 pound gorilla. I think probably two or three years down the road, we'll probably see two or three form factors emerge."

If there's one draw back I see to the SD card... it would be it's size. It is almost too small. And you wouldn't want to lose your memory. Bloomberg Bootcamp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
