Electronic Arts Hopes for Majestic Profits

Techstination feature for Monday, August 6, 2001

Call it the computer game version of reality TV. Bloomberg Bootcamp, a report on today's technology. Electronic Arts has unleashed Majestic... .

"What we're trying to do in Majestic is put you at the very center of your own suspense thriller. So we're using the Internet to enable that. And the game will call you on the phone, it will send you faxes, it will instant message with you, send you emails. There are hundreds of Web sites that we've created that look like real companies or individuals' home pages. And we use this sort of canvas to paint this picture of this ongoing and developing mystery that you're at the very center of."

Majestic creator Neil Young... .who drew inspiration from the X Files and the 1997 Michael Douglas movie, "The Game." If you allow it... you'll start getting clues... in the form of phone calls at all hours of the day and night...

"Hi. It's Kendra. I'm sorry to bother you but...

Better alert your spouse that these phone calls are from a game. A multi-million dollar ad campaign is promoting the game... .which costs 9.99 a month for each of the first eight monthly episodes. That..says Young... will be the first season. In the second season... plans are to include a Majestic TV show as part of the experience. A twist on reality TV... .

"You know a lot of people lead fairly mundane lives and if you can find ways to inject excitement into that day, that seems like a good cause."

And one that Young and Electronic Arts hope produce majestic profits. Bloomberg Bootcamp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
