"I think most people will agree that it is good to have competition in any market and we, as a company, we worked very hard over many years to make the best possible browser. And what we focused on is to make a browser that is fast and small."
And the Oslo, Norway based Opera has done just that. It is smaller and faster than Internet Explorer or Netscape and includes an email application as well... .
"We started off on Windows but after a while we've also made the browser available on other operating systems, some of which are being used for PDAs and other Internet devices."
There are versions for the Mac and Linux too. The company makes money by including a small ad on the browser. Tetzchner says users number in the millions and Opera is being downloaded by about 20 thousand people a day. Why?
What a lot of people experience is that Opera runs faster. That the information is displayed quicker on the screen."
The difference is more noticeable if you don't have a high speed connection to the Internet. Opera lives up to its promise... .but don't expect to hear the fat lady singing for Microsoft. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
