Like a Movie? Send it to a Friend

Techstination feature for Wednesday, September 5, 2001

When it comes to digital video recording... the fun has just begun. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Digital video recorders are now in about three hundred fifty thousand homes. ReplayTV, TIVO and Microsoft Ultimate TV devices let you time shift your favorite programs... storing them on a hard drive. But for high tech households... .SonicBlue's ReplayTV... is coming out with new capabilities that should generate some excitement. VP Steve Shannon... says the next generation, the ReplayTV 4000... .includes an Ethernet port that enables lots of new features...

"For example, let's say you record a show or you put a home video on your ReplayTV, you just have a great movie or video you want to share with a friend or family member, you can now send that show over the Internet to another ReplayTV 4000 user."

You can also share the videos among other ReplayTV 4000 units in the house... .and use the large hard drives for computer storage as well. But how will content providers like HBO react... if I record a movie and send it over the Internet to a friend?

"We don't view it as being really any different than passing a video tape on to a friend or maybe emailing an MP3 file over to a friend. It's a similar type of market dynamic."

We'll see. Another controversial feature... one button elimination of commercials. Pricing starts at about 700 dollars. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
