Sony's PS2 Push

Techstination feature for Friday, September 7, 2001

Will Sony win another video game victory? Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Sony's PlayStation is the top selling video game console of all time... and its PlayStation 2 is racking up impressive numbers too...

"Right now we're producing about one and a half million units worldwide every month and with those numbers... it varies month to month... but we project we'll have seven million units installed by the end of March."

Sony Computer Entertainment's Ryan Bowling. But can the PlayStation 2 launched last year... .fend off the new games machines due out this fall from Microsoft and Nintendo? Bowling says it's all about the games... .

"I think it really comes down to the variety as well as top quality content and we feel with some of the second generation titles that we're coming out with this fall, it really demonstrates what the PS2 is all about in terms of technology and that experience when the gamer picks up that controller."

New add-ons... such as a hard drive and networking... should help Sony keep pace with the competition. And the new games will include a title called Frequency... .that turns gaming skills into music... (music) It was developed by an MIT Media Lab spin off headed by Alex Rigopulos...

"We turn the PlayStation game controller into a musical instrument and you play the game by constructing pieces that we've licensed from a couple dozen major artists."

The idea is to put those well honed game controller skills to good use. It's fun, challenging and addictive. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
