"This is very exciting. This is actually the first time in the past fifteen, twenty years ... really since inception... .that the name space as we know it is being expanded."
Richard Forman, President and CEO of Register.com, one of the providers of domain registration services. Among the new domain are dot biz, dot name, dot pro... for professionals such as doctors and lawyers... .dot info and dot museum. They'll begin to roll out at the end of the month. Forman says the dot name extension for individuals... for instance... .could generate a lot of interest... .
"You can go ahead and create your own name space under your dot name very easily ... and it's a name that you're going to have for life. You can give it to someone when they're in their teens or even younger and it's a name they can give regardless of what college they go to or regardless of what job they have. They can carry this name, which is really an identifier or an address over the Internet for their entire lives. And we're excited because we think people are going to build a lot of new applications around these name spaces."
Domain registrations typically cost about thirty five dollars a year. One downside to the new top level domains... .it could make it more difficult to guess the Web address of whatever it is your looking for. Is it a dot com... or a dot biz... or maybe dot info?
