Rescuing the rescuers. New technology that could help. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. So many of the firefighters and police officers who rushed into the World Trade Center trying to save lives after the terrorist attacks... .were trapped inside as the towers collapsed. How many could have been saved if they could have been quickly found... we'll never know. But new devices being brought to market by the Digital Angel division of Applied Digital Solutions just might make a difference in future situations. VP and Chief Technology Officer Keith Bolton tells us... .a personal beacon is being developed ... .

"In this case, rescue workers could be equipped with Digital Angel-like technology so that their location and well being could be carefully monitored."

Bolton says an emergency button on either a watch or pager sized device... .could trigger a beacon that could help to locate a person using GPS and cellular triangulation technologies. The company has been developing the Digital Angel systems with the idea of marketing them to help locate children or senior citizens... .

"And as the demand after September 11th came in from shareholders and countless calls and emails, the senior management made a determination that we would place a major emphasis on personal safety and search and rescue."

It will be tested beginning in November in Florida and the company has already begun reaching out to the fire department in New York City. You can find more information at DigitalAngel.net. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
