Will Video Conferencing Flourish?

Techstination feature for Monday, October 1, 2001

Will video conferencing flourish in the wake of the terrorist attacks? Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Some investors think so... .and with the decline in airline travel it would seem video conferencing is a natural alternative. After the events of September 11th, Polycom set up a free video conferencing service to help people who were affected. At First Virtual Communications, CEO Killko Caballero believes the attacks are only one factor in the expected growth of the industry...

"And actually the phenomenon was already starting because of the economy and the costs. People were looking into online remote collaboration more and more and with the attack, we're just seeing a significant increase in interest in remote communications."

First Virtual Communications offers a server application called Click to Meet...

"Which is an end to end solution, basically, completely hiding the infrastructure and the complexity of use so that from an end user's perspective, initiating a conference call is as simple as picking up your phone and dialing the number of the other person without knowing what kind of point, what kind of network they're running on. And that is our flagship product ... we're really focused on that, believe that is the key technology to bringing ease of use to the end user which will really help that technology take off."

The concept could also get a boost from the upcoming release of Windows XP which will ship with video conferencing capability. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
