"The MX is actually what we call a desktop entertainment system."
Sony's VP and General Manager for VAIO PCs, Mark Hanson. The MX is a PC... coupled with high quality speakers, a TV with digital recording capability like a RePlay or Tivo, the hardware and software for editing video or still pictures... a built in mini-disc player-recorder and a DVD recorder as well. And just about everything can be controlled with a TV style remote ...
"So we virtually covered every type of digital media you can imagine can be inputted and outputted on this device."
All in a stylish box with a mirror chrome finish.
"It doesn't look like a desktop PC. It has more of a receiver look. In fact, there's a digital display on the front, when you change it to any of the different devices we have in this, it actually indicates what that device is and will give you data information much like a high end home entertainment system would do on the receiver as well."
Technology wise... the Vaio MX is loaded... but it carries a hefty price. The base is about 28 hundred dollars without a monitor. That's about two thousand more than say... a plain old Dell Pentium 4... .
"The key thing about this product isn't really to focus too much on the PC capabilities, it's all of the things this product can do."
Think of it as the PC version of a fully loaded luxury car. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
