Techstination feature for Monday, October 22, 2001

The release of a PC game... that lets you battle terrorists. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. The terrorist attacks of September 11th prompted a number of Hollywood studios to cancel or at least postpone the releases of films that would have seemed insensitive. At the computer game maker Sierra, part of Vivendi Universal Publishing, the call was made to go ahead with the release this month of a new edition of a game called Swat 3 (sound)...

"Swat 3 is full of bad guys, be they terrorists or criminals. On some missions you do fight terrorists."

Swat 3 executive producer Rod Fung. The game is based in Los Angeles... on the L.A.P.D's Swat tactics. And among the plot lines... .

"There is a threat of a terrorist thinking of using an airplane to distribute a biological agent."

The series has sold about two million copies over the years... and work on this edition in which terrorists attempt to disrupt the signing of a global peace treaty... began long before September 11th. Fung tells us while the decision was made to go ahead with the release of the game...

"We really had to think about what we were doing and we actually had an ad that featured some terrorists in it. We decided to pull the ad after September 11th and the money that was planned for the ad campaign we actually ended up donating it to New York Fraternal Order of Police Fund."

And Fung says the terrorist elements are being removed from future versions of the Swat series. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
