XP Buyers Need Norton Update

Techstination feature for Thursday, November 1, 2001

If you're installing new Windows... there may be even more to buy. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Besides spending one or two hundred dollars for Windows XP, if you are planning to upgrade your computer... you may have to spend more to upgrade system maintenance and anti-virus software... .

"If you upgrade to the new operating system, for all of our products you'll need to update to the new versions of the Norton Symantec products."

Symantec VP Sarah Hicks. During the installation of XP, you'll get a warning that the existing anti-virus software on your machine will no longer work. And when it comes to products like Norton Utilities, Hicks says even with the improved stability of Windows XP...

"There's still a need to have a lot of these products. Particularly when you are talking about some of the functionality in Norton Utilities for example. We continue to have Speed Disk, which organizes your hard drive files efficiently. And Norton Disk Doctor works on repairing disk problems. And these types of things, while they might be less often necessary, continue to be necessary with any operating system functionality."

At the very least, every PC should have anti-virus software running. There are some marketing promotions out there offering Norton Anti-Virus for free, along with the purchase of the professional version of Windows XP. It sells for about 200 dollars... .about double the price of the home edition. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
