Unified Messaging Pushes Expansion

Techstination feature for Friday, November 9, 2001

One phone number that can follow you anywhere. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. It is called unified messaging... an idea that may not be new... .but one that makes more an more sense all of the time. You have phone numbers at work... at home... .a cell phone... ..then there is email... .and your pager. The idea of giving out one phone number that can find you wherever you happen to be is pretty appealing... .especially when it allows you to screen those incoming contacts. uReach Technologies has about eight hundred thousand users... .and is poised for growth with new partnerships with Verizon and others. The company's Julie Schmidt...

"You can put up to four telephone numbers, your current numbers, in the system and it will sequentially follow those numbers and locate you wherever you are. And if it doesn't locate you, it will take a message."

You can be alerted to those messages by phone, pager... .or by instant message on a PC... .where you can listen to your messages online. By phone... you can listen to and reply to email. There are plans starting at 12.95 a month... .for varying numbers of service minutes... .

"Any time that you would dial the 800 service to connect to your messages as opposed to looking at them on the Web ... that's one aspect. Those would be counted as minutes. Another aspect is someone else calling your 800 service and for the duration of that call that also would be counted against that call."

uReach says the average mobile professional uses between 150 and 300 minutes a month... which would cost upwards of 26 dollars a month. You can find more information at ureachtechnologies.com. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
