DVDs Still Hot...in Cold Economy

Techstination feature for Wednesday, November 14, 2001

In an anemic economy... .those DVD machines are still selling. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. With high quality pictures and sound... .DVD players have won consumers over. At Sony Consumer Electronics, marketing director Steve Fischer says the technology is catching on faster than the VCR did...

"Sales of DVD in the U.S. are booming. NPD, which is a recognized market tracking company are expecting sales to hit about 13 million units this year... which is almost double last year's sales. And if those numbers come true, then about 25 percent of all U.S. households will have DVD by the end of this year."

And while prices for basic players have plummeted below two hundred dollars... compared to more than five hundred three years ago... .Sony is seeking customers looking to take full advantage of what DVDs have to offer... with what it calls DVD Dream Systems....

"The DVD player and the amplifier functions are all integrated into one box. And then we make it very easy to hook up the speakers using color coded connectors."

It takes just minutes... to set up and creates near theatre quality sound in your TV room. Sony Dream System prices start at around six hundred dollars. There are other companies adding new features to DVD players. Sampo, for instance, has created a 250 dollar system that plays back MP3 music... and has a CompactFlash slot for creating slide shows on your TV from digital photos. While another model doubles as a Karaoke machine. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
