Palm Continues to Struggle

So many people have those little Palm computers... .but the company is struggling to survive. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. With its stock having fallen about ninety percent this year... .and Carl Yankowski resigning as CEO... where does Palm go from here? At the Comdex trade show this month... .there were no dramatic product announcements from the company. Senior solutions group director Claudia Romanini tells us there are some add-ons on the way for existing Palms...

"We're showing a Palm branded SD I/O, SD I/O stands for secure digital input output card with Bluetooth technology integrated in. This product will be available shortly, by the beginning of the year."

The Bluetooth technology will allow short distance wireless communication with other Bluetooth devices... coming to market. Mobile phones, printers or PCs. Expandability has been the strong point of Handspring... which has led the way in innovation on the Palm platform. It is headed by Jeff Hawkins... who invented the original Palm in 1994. Handspring is about to release the Treo... .a compact combination cell phone and Palm device. His view of the future of the Palm OS...

"They will have to make a lot of major improvements to it, they will have to be very clever in their licensing strategy and their business strategy, they will have to do a lot of things. And it's certainly possible the Palm OS could play a very large role going forward. But we don't work there any more and we don't control them and we don't know what they're going to do all the time."

And Hawkins says Handspring has a lot of options when it comes to building products in the future. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
