Touchless Touch Screens

Techstination feature for Tuesday, December 11, 2001

Touchless touch screens. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Imagine being able to simply point at your computer screen to control the cursor... without a mouse and without having to touch the screen at all. A company called JesterTek uses tiny cameras to let you do just that. CEO Mark Weinreb...

"By pointing at the screen you can navigate and initiate commands just like you would a mouse, but you can be any distance from any size monitor."

The initial uses of the technology allow people outside storefront windows to control displays behind the glass...

"One of the largest applications that we have is really a hands free control of a video monitor. Whether it be in a public venue space or at an airport where most people don't want to touch or have to be near a large video display component because number one, you don't want to touch it and number two, it's much better if you're away from it to see the actual media presentation."

It's a gee whiz kind of technology, but Weinreb believes eventually it will become commonplace...

"We're working on many initiates to make the technology an affordable consumer product that ultimately can be used in the operation of many different home devices... whether they be a PC or the game console market or whether it be simply sitting in your couch and pointing at the TV to control a digital set top box."

It may not be polite, but we may be doing a lot of pointing. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
