Where the Net Goes From Here

Techstination feature for Friday, December 28, 2001

Where the Internet goes from here. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. There are some survivors amidst the ruins of the dot com collapse... and the Internet is evolving into a very different place than it was a year ago. The kinds of free services that were available to Web surfers... have vanished. The survivors are looking to subscriptions... instead of advertising revenue. Homestead.com... used to be home to ten million free Web sites. Now personal Web sites cost ten dollars a month... .and CEO Justin Kitch says that has meant saying good-bye to a lot of people...

"Anybody who is out there trying to convert their free Web service to a paying service would be fortunate to get ten percent of their members to convert."

That would mean a drop off of 90 percent... or more. At IBM's Pervasive Computing Division, VP Jon Prial says there has been a shift in the way technology is perceived... .

"What's happening now is we see companies getting very focused on return on investment. And their focus is turning to employee productivity."

The gold rush and the freebies are gone. Now the Internet gets practical...

"The mobile office. Extending email out to all employees on a number of different types of devices, sales force automation... and field force automation... including trucking applications... logistics applications... even extending out to machine to machine applications with soda machines, for example, identifying when they're low on inventory."

And if you aren't paying already for the online services you like to use... if they stick around at all... get ready to pay for them. Bloomberg Boot Camp... I'm Fred Fishkin.
