The surfing capitol of the United States... .is Pittsburgh. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. (sound) Remember the days when surfing had something to do with waves... instead of .wav files. Now the average 18 and 19 year olds in the U.S. are spending three hours a day surfing on the Internet. That's according to a new survey conducted by Digital Marketing Services for AOL Time Warner. And AOL's Lisa Gibby says, yes, the new surfing capitol is Pittsburgh. It's the city where teenagers spend the most time online...

"Well we have Pittsburgh number one, New York number two, Cleveland came in as number three, San Diego number four and Miami was number five."

In those cities, younger teens are spending more than the national average of 12.28 hours a week online. The most popular activities according to the survey... .are email and instant messaging, games, downloading music and yes, parents, researching homework. And Gibby says of the 18 and 19 year olds... 56 percent would rather communicate through the Internet than over the phone...

"It used to be that kids would rush home from school every day to pick up the telephone to call their friends. And now we find that they're actually racing to their computers and wireless devices to chat with their friends."

In fact, the survey shows most teens agree that more people will know their email address rather than their phone number within ten years. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
