"You hear the phrase artificial intelligence you think about robots on Lost in Space waving their arms around at explicit entities as opposed to what is happening which is embedded technologies making the fabric of our computer systems better and more vibrant and responsive to users."
Eric Horvitz is the manager of the adaptive systems group at Microsoft... and he says AI is finding its way into everyday software...
"If you think about the task of a great secretary at your office, who knows how and where to interrupt you with an important communication or note or memo or task... that's pretty deep reasoning. We want to give computers the same kinds of abilities to understand, for example, when a particular email should be routed to your cell phone versus wait until later."
Horvitz says a product called Mobile Manager already has some of those capabilities. And the technology will find its way into the home entertainment center as well...
"We actually figure out by getting a sense for the time of day and the kind of patterns of television programming that are enjoyed how to automatically design or figure out best sets of schedules and show that can be enjoyed by the groups that happen to assemble at different times in the home around different devices."
