Gateway's Hopes for Olympic Gold

Techstination feature for Monday, February 11, 2002

Gateway hopes to win gold at the Olympics. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. (sound)While the PC industry in general seems to have been competing in the downhill of late... Gateway is hoping its investment in the Olympic games will give it a much needed jump... .

"Gateway's the official hardware supplier for the Winter Olympic Games. In addition to that, we're operating the Gateway CyberSpots, which is a network of video email kiosks located in each one of our stores as well as in venues around Salt Lake City including inside the athlete's village."

Gateway's Brad Williams. Email messages can be sent to specific athletes or teams from the kiosks... or from the Web site at Cyberspot2002.com. About Gateway's investment in the games, Williams says...

"Our investment in the Olympic Games is entirely in kind. So we've donated about 53 hundred PCs, including desktops, laptops and servers. And we've also had people on the ground here for about two and a half years working as part of the Olympics IT consortium."

Gateway is not revealing how much all of that costs or how much it is spending in a marketing blitz coinciding with the games...

"We spent last year getting our cost structure in line so that we could be competitive. And now it's time to tell the world about it. We're increasing our marketing spend by about fifty percent, February over January. Most Americans are going to see a Gateway spot an average of ten times during February."
