Pentium 4 Notebooks Arrive

Notebook PCs ramp up to Pentium 4. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Intel is just out with its line of mobile Pentium 4 processors... .and computer makers are wasting no time revamping their product lines. Toshiba has announced Pentium 4 models throughout its product line... from the consumer Satellite series through the enterprise Tecra line. But with prices starting in the 24 hundred dollar range... will they sell? Worldwide Product Marketing Director Masa Okumura... .

"One of the areas where we are seeing very large growth in the past couple of quarters is in the mid to high end of the market. These are people buying for the rich feature set and their investment protection."

One cool new feature in the consumer Satellite line... is a clear touchpad... with a programmable LCD screen underneath that can be used as a calculator or a notepad. Compaq is out of the gate with a mobile Pentium 4 in the Presario 2800. Product manager Lorena Kubera says consumers will notice the difference... .

"Much higher speed. The Pentium 4 mobile processors are going to start at 1.6 and 1.7 GHz, so for those people who need that desktop level performance but still have some level of mobility need, this is the perfect product for them."

What Intel does not have is a low voltage version of the mobile Pentium 4. That will have an impact on battery life... and will prevent the chips from being used in ultra-light notebooks. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
