PCs of the Future... Intel's Chief Technology Officer

Techstination feature for Thursday, March 7, 2002

The PCs of the future. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Perhaps you've heard of something called Moore's Law... the observation by Intel co-founder Gordon Moore that the performance of integrated circuits would double about every eighteen months. With Pentium 4 processors now topping 2 GHz, where will it end? Intel's Chief Technology Officer Pat Gelsinger...

"I'm going to make this bold assertion... that the answer is never."

That would mean processors running at 4 GHz by the middle of next year... and 8GHz... by 2005...

"We are confident that as far as the eye can see, we are going to continue on Moore's law, this perpetual doubling every 18 months. So, no, it doesn't end, we're on track and with boldness and aggressiveness we're going to say we're going to continue Moore's law and even more... the industry can count on it for decades into the future. And I'd say this is our boldest assertion ever around that core direction or guidepost for the industry."

And along with faster and cheaper processors... will come integrated capabilities... for all kinds of wireless networking and communications... .

"The ability to have self configuring, dynamic networks that have the ability to sense the environment around them. You can imagine we have a demonstration of these little moats where you'd walk into a room, these moats sense your presence and take actions based on that."
