A talking Blackberry. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. They have a growing base of loyal users. The Blackberry wireless handheld organizers from Research in Motion, or RIM. Their popularity among corporate users stems from the always on capability that keeps them connected to their office email. Now RIM is out with a new model that adds wireless calling capability. Chairman and co-CEO Jim Balsillie..

"It's the new Blackberry 5810 and really it's the Blackberry as you know it but now it operates on the GSM GPRS network in North America and it supports both normal Blackberry data capability and it's a cell phone also."

How does it differ from, say the new Handspring Treo that combines a PDA with a cell phone?

"Well what's very different is that this is a packet data appliance, that's fundamentally what's different. And underneath a Blackberry it's a packet data machine and that the architecture that the Internet uses and the reason that the Blackberry's been so successful is we're a packet data radio coupled with the application of Blackberry that gives you secure push email. Plus it's a cell phone. Previous devices have been a cell phone plus an organizer but they haven't done that packet data radio capability."

Charges vary by carrier... but typically a user will pay about forty dollars a month for the packet data service ... .plus the cost of a cell phone plan. But you won't be using those plan minutes for the Blackberry connection. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
