The Return of iCraveTV

Techstination feature for Friday, April 5, 2002

Live TV... over the Web. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. A Web site called iCraveTV... based in Canada went online at the end of 1999. The idea was to rebroadcast channels it received via cable... .on the net. Within two months... the broadcast industry had the site shut down. But as of next month... it will be back... with a new corporate owner... EnterVision. CEO Herbert Becker says...

"We're launching May 1st, we hope to have 10 to 15 stations running at that time. We have several running now which we are testing and evaluating and we hope that a year from now we have a hundred stations running."

The demos I've seen running from EnterVision look better than streaming video available now from Real Networks or Microsoft's Windows Media Player. Becker says his idea is simply to become a kind of Internet affiliate of networks or local stations. He won't say which broadcasters will be on board at launch. How will he make money?

"Most of the companies broadcasting with us have purchased or will be purchasing the EnterVision Broadcaster. EnterVision Broadcaster is a server ... into that they plug their broadcast ... on the other end of that they plug their Internet connection."

All you'll need to watch is a browser. EnterVision says most of the channels will be free. He expects there will be some premium channels available by subscription...the same way they're available on cable or satellite today.
