Turning Home Movies Into DVDs

Techstination feature for Wednesday, April 10, 2002

Turning your home movies... into DVDs. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. DVD players have become the hottest selling consumer electronics gadgets over the last year. Now what you need... is a drive in your computer to let you transfer those old family videos onto DVD. Apple, Sony and Compaq and Hewlett Packard have taken the lead in offering the technology to consumers. At Intel... ... Ralph Bond says...

"Apple Corporation did a great job in giving their users a complete software experience when making home made DVD discs. The good news this year is the PC community has brought that kind of software experience to the millions and millions of PC users."

Pinnacle Express and Ulead's DVD Factory are among the software packages designed to make the job simple... .although Apple's iMovie is hard to beat. On the PC side... you'll need a fast processor, that's why Intel's involved, lots of hard drive space and what's called a Firewire card... .that will let you connect and control a digital camcorder right from the software. Finally... you'll need a drive to record onto blank DVD discs. The drives are now about five hundred dollars... .but should be dropping significantly this year... .

"So the stage is set for consumers to realistically take their old home movies, especially if they're the old analog home movies..you better get those guys digitized cause in 15 to 20 years they can deteriorate to the point of being unwatchable... now all the technology pieces are in place, the building blocks are here for consumers to do this."

I'll have more on DVD recording in segments to come. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
