While there are some signs of a revival of consumer interest in personal computers... .everyone from Microsoft to the PC manufacturers have been searching for ways to generate excitement about the technology. The recording industry may not like it... .but Gateway has been conducting classes to show people how to burn music CDs with their PCs. Legally, they say. Now the company is pushing wireless networks. CEO Ted Waitt...

"If you have a wireless network installed in your home or office, it's just tremendous the capability that you can have. We really are viewing the wireless networking component and broadband as kind of being one combined value proposition. So we're starting now marketing wireless on a national basis, it's very easy to use, people can share a broadband line whether at home or in the office."

While installing a wireless network is easier than you probably think... .Gateway will do it for you...

"We're doing a lot of bundles right now... we're offering for 499 dollars a complete wireless network setup for homes."

The price includes the hardware for two computers, installation and setting up the networking software. Gateway... which has been locked in a price war with number one computer maker Dell... .hopes the strategy will help it regain market share. Waitt is optimistic...

"Fundamentally we have the same business model as Dell, a lot of people lose site of that. Our roots are a direct company."
