"Today's notebooks mean absolutely zero compromise computing and in fact it's the fastest growing segment of the PC industry. More and people both in business and consumers are buying notebook PCs. The reason for that is because you don't have to compromise. Incredible levels of performance and incredible features... rich TFT panels, DVD, CD re-write capabilities, all in a notebook PC so you can take it wherever you go."
The market research firm NPD TEchworld says while desktop computer sales fell by about 25 percent in February, for instance, retail notebook sales were up 30 percent. For Intel and computer makers that's good news. Profits are typically higher on the portable machines. And as wireless connectivity options increase... notebooks could become even more popular...
"Wireless is one of those catalysts for growth that we think will become more prominent. In New York, for example, there's a hundred and twenty what we call public hot spots where you can take your notebook, connect to the Internet, download your email without using wires."
But still, notebooks aren't the right solution for everyone. For game players who like to add the latest graphic and sound capabilities... or if you want to be able to easily add extra storage... desktops are a better choice. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
