Making HDTV more affordable. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. There are all kinds of issues holding back high definition television. Convincing cable providers to get on board, getting broadcasters to offer more HD content... .and then... convincing consumers that its worth the investment. I would venture to guess that most people are perfectly happy with the quality of the pictures they see on their TVs today. They may not be willing to pay thousands more for high definition. The good news is... maybe they won't have to. Prices are starting to drop, significantly. Samsung is introducing HD capable TVs starting at under eight hundred dollars. "Price has been a very important subject and Samsung's really addressing that this year by really trying to hit affordable price points. Something that's really knock 'em sock'em prices. 799 dollars on a 27 inch HDTV. 1199 on a 32 inch. These are all the opening pieces..there are some step ups in the line for different assorted features, but really to try to get closer to the prices that people are paying for analog today."

A wide screen 30 inch model... with that movie screen aspect... is down to 12 hundred dollars. The prices are a little misleading, you'll still need to buy a set top box to tune in HD signals. That adds significantly to the cost... but Samsung will have a 450 dollar model available this summer. That's down from about 700 dollars. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
