"Various retailers have various solutions but certainly the kiosk is one very popular one. Go up, insert the media card into a kiosk and with a touch screen, you can manipulate your photos, choose the photos, choose the sizes and hit the print button. Then you either wait one hour, two minutes or over night depending on what the policies of the retailer are."
The quality of the prints is better than what you would typically get from printing at home. Whether it is more expensive... is tough to say. Printer ink and photo paper are not cheap..
"Sometimes, the most convenient and easy thing for you to do is not fiddle with your computer, worry about whether you've got enough ink and paper to do it, but just to drop it off on the way to the dry cleaner. Or when you're doing your Saturday morning chores walk in, look at your images and choose them and print them out. That's what people have always done with photography and that's what digital camera developing brings to them... is convenience."
The idea is to give consumers something they are already familiar with when they switch to digital... and at the same time... keep the photo processing profits alive and well. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
